Standing Firm

Seaga Gillard

Poor but never weak
in this dark world I weep
heart full of grief
waking up on this slave ship.
Steel was forged in fire
tribulations only makes you stronger
never hold a grudge against your brother
open your mind knowledge is power.
Never cower — the devil is just a coward
be careful how you speak
the tongue is sharper than steel.

Seaga Willard is from the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia. She speaks her native language French Creole and English. She has been incarcerated since 2019 at Central Prison, North Carolina on Death Row. To be imaginative when surrounded by walls is a powerful thing.
